Gloria Caceres

Experience

Hard Work
Gloria worked for 12 years as a long-term substitute teacher in Corpus Christi ISD schools, filling in for teachers on extended leave of absence or maternity leave. "Being a teacher is a big responsibility. It's more than doing lesson plans and making sure kids have the skills they need to succeed," she says. "You become a mentor and you become a big part of these kids' lives. Many of them did not have parents around. They'd tell me about things going on in their lives and all I'd want to do is wrap them in my arms and tell them 'Everything's going to be fine, things are going to get better,' but sometimes I knew they weren't going to get better." It was during this time that Gloria realized it would take a more than just voting to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children growing up in Nueces County.

Accountability
A devout Democrat, Gloria went to work for the Democratic Party in 1991 determined to make a difference. She swiftly took on more responsibility, serving as a Precinct Chair, Elections Administrator and Secretary of the party and working to recruit election judges, post election notices, and establish polling places. She successfully managed elections throughout the county – without major problems and under budget – she even sent money back.

Results!
In 2006, Gloria became Chief of Staff for State Representative Solomon Ortiz, Jr. in charge of district and constituent services and daily operations. Gloria helped people solve a variety of problems at every level of government. A typical day might have found her working on jail diversion or colonias issues with the county in the morning, meeting with a constituent about a Medicaid problem, and attending a lunch with Veterans or business leaders about economic development legislation before driving out to meet with residents worried about flooding in their neighborhood.
